Snail mail 2.0: Staying in touch on the cheap
As a 21st-century traveler, you can Facebook from Fremantle, Twitter from Titicaca, and blog from Budapest to stay in touch with friends and family back home. But there’s really nothing like good, old-fashioned postcards to let loved ones know what a fabulous time you’re having on your holiday jaunts.
Bringing a little piece of the 21st-century to snail mail, start-up
HazelMail allows you to upload a digital photo – say, of you in front of the Eiffel Tower, sipping tea in Istanbul, or at the running of the bulls – from anywhere in the world. The company then prints the photo as a postcard, adds your personalized message to the back, and mails it to Mom back in Washington. At a flat rate of $1.50 a card, the price is competitive with the cost of a postcard plus stamps in most countries. For instance, postage alone from Australia to the United States costs 79 cents.Heading to London?
Royal Mail is going to charge you 83 cents a pop.
I’m not usually one to forego quality for price when it comes to postcards. But at $1.50 a personalized card, you really can’t go wrong. Just think how jealous you can make your D.C. coworkers when you vacation to Fiji in February and send them the picture to rub it in.
Or use HazelMail as an alternative to Christmas cards this year. Let your friends and family know about all your exciting travels this year by sending your holiday greetings on the back of a HazelMail-printed picture of you and the family on vacation last summer. Don't forget to send one to the new friends you made on your journeys.
