A weighted blanket is much more than a security blanket. It’s more like a gigantic hug that can calm and comfort.
Weighted products, such as blankets, lap pads and vests, are often used by occupational therapists to help give that extra boost of sensory input needed by many children.
But the benefits can go much further than in an OT gym. More and more parents are using weighted blankets at home to help kids sleep. And some kids may even concentrate better when wearing a weighted vest or lap pad in school.
Who can benefit from a weighted blanket or other weighted product?
Sensory Processing Disorder is a common issue with many special needs children. SPD is the chronic difficulty of processing sensory information. Some kids may be overwhelmed with loud noises or bright lights. While other kids need and want a sensory-filled environment.
And although SPD goes hand in hand with other conditions or disorders, kids who do not necessarily have ongoing sensory issues may also benefit from weighted blankets. Weighted products can help tame frequent tantrums, aid with attention, relieve restless legs and even help kids sleep through the night.
Where do you get weighted products?
Although it’s tempting to make your own weighted blanket, it’s really best to leave it up to someone who knows the proper specifications. And since the item needs to be filled with plastic pellets or other material to give it weight, it’s important to make sure it’s properly made to avoid the risk of the child opening the blanket.
With the help of your OT or pediatrician, determine the appropriate weight for your child’s weighted blanket. The common formula is 10 percent of your child’s weight, plus one pound. But this should be determined by a professional.
Ask your pediatrician or OT for a catalogue of weighted products, or look into the Affordable Weighted Blankets or DreamCatcher Custom Weighted Blanket. Or look into other websites that make weighted items.
