I recent spoke with Nancy Nkansah of NCapsul.com about how her business is helping prevent unfortunate medical accidents.
How has the economy affected your business?
The recent decline of the US economy beginning in 2008 has affected Ncapsul, Inc in two primary ways. The first way is advertising. Due to the decline of the economy, we have had to cut down on our marketing budgets. The change in our marketing structure has affected our business a second way, as we are not able to reach as many people in 2009 as we originally intended too. However, as we are in the fourth quarter of 2009, certain changes have been implemented to curtail the effects the economy is having on our business.
What are the benefits of people utilizing your service?
The Institute of Medicine reveals there are at least 1.5 million preventable adverse drug events per year, and even this number is largely underestimated! Ncapsul Inc, as well as the healthcare industry as a whole recognizes in any given week four out of five US adults will be taking prescription medications, over the counter drugs or dietary supplements of some sort. Without a proper record-keeping tool of their medications, these individuals leave themselves open to adverse drug events from medication errors. Ncapsul Inc, steps into this role by providing people a CapsulCard to “help make medicine simple.” The CapsulCard™ is a durable wallet sized medication ID card on which a person’s health care providers’ names, pharmacy name, and medicine regimen is printed on the surface. The benefits of this card allows for accuracy for the healthcare provider, safety for the patient, and convenience for both.
Can you share some success stories of some of your clients?
A client of ours expressed a traumatic experience to us, which sadly, we have come to see is quite the norm within the healthcare industry. This client described us a situation where they experienced a severe drug interaction between one of their home medicines and a medicine the emergency room doctor prescribed. They retold the story of being readmitted back to the hospital for a week. In recounting their story, the understood the importance of having a CapsulCard, which would have provided the emergency room doctors a list of all their medications, which have probably reduced the likely hood of them being prescribed the adverse medication. Stories like these come in consistently from our clients and afterwards all express their confidence and praise for the CapsulCard in reducing medication errors.
What does the future hold for your business?
In the US, healthcare costs are advancing at an alarming rate. The Institute of Medicine only reports more people taking prescription medications and more people falling subject to adverse drug events. Government is currently working on reform to control the costs of healthcare. Ncapsul Inc, provides a free electronic medication record (EMR) which is compatible with current EMR processes allowing for easy conversion when electronic records become the norm. In addition, Ncapsul provides a durable portable record keeping tool in the form of the CapsulCard to have a list of medications easily accessible to present to healthcare providers when receiving care.
Our future is to continue raising the awareness of The CapsulCard™ within the healthcare industry. Our goal is to become the leader in both electronic medication records, as well as portable record tools, helping to “make medicine simple” for both the healthcare provider and consumer.
