By signing a presidential decree, President Barack Obama declared June, 2009 as Great Outdoors Month. The proclamation is part of an effort to get American citizens outside so we can “pay tribute to and preserve the great outdoors.” The President goes on to say that exploring the outdoors can improve our health, allow us to find solitude, and encourage our children to learn about and appreciate the environment.

Here in Utah, there are so many ways we can take the President's advice by recreating outdoors this month. Our state offers hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, canyoneering, road biking, trail running, camping, fishing, and boating. And that's just what can be done in the summer.

In addition, the President's decree announces that the Department of the Interior is “launching a summer mentoring initiative as part of this effort.” This new program “invites families and friends to teach children about the joys and wonders of the outdoors.” President Obama goes on to say that he is also “increasing the number of youth involved in national service on public lands. Through AmeriCorps and other programs and partnerships, we can continue our Nation's proud tradition of service and respect for the environment.”

In a state filled with 5 national parks, 42 state parks and public lands covered with mountains, deserts, canyons, and cliffs, there isn't a much better place in America to get outside and explore everything Utah has to offer during Great Outdoors Month.
