National Trails Day is on Saturday, June 6, and there will be several events around the Wasatch Front where people can volunteer. Trails that need repair work, widening, invasive plant removal and brush trimming will be targeted for improvements by many different local organizations.
A good example of a trail that needs work is one that sees lots of traffic in Salt Lake City. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail will be worked on between City Creek Canyon and Morris Meadows, and anyone who frequently enjoys this section of trail is encouraged to give back and volunteer. Crews will meet at 8 a.m. at the Morris Meadows Trailhead, located at 645 East 18th Avenue, and work until noon to get rid of rocks, widen the trail and build erosion barriers.
Breakfast, lunch and water will be provided as well as all needed tools, but you must bring your own water bottle, gloves and eye protection. Long pants and closed toe boots are required. Volunteers must be at least 16-years-old and in good condition. As a show of gratitude, a free REI t-shirt will be given to all participants.
