Gear Review: Guyot Designs The Utensils

Utensils aren't the first thing that come to mind while thinking about camping gear. But when it's dinner time, the right utensils for the job become the most important gear in that moment. Instead of bringing the entire kitchen into the outdoors, Guyot has created a five-in-one system of utensils that can be used for just about everything.

The Utensils consist of two pieces that are a spoon, fork, knife, spatula and spreader. Both utensils are appropriate for eating, cooking and serving food. According to Guyot Designs, The Utensils are able to be used without scratching non-stick coated pots and pans because they are made from a lightweight, high-temperature nylon polymer that can be used in temperatures up to 450 degrees.

The Utensils are great for car camping, as I found out on a recent trip to Escalante. They were great for everything from spooning up oatmeal, spearing sausages, spreading cheese on crackers, flipping chicken on the grill, cutting through bread rolls, and slicing up a hunk of Spam. After cooking and eating meals, The Utensils cleaned up easy and snapped together for storage.

Backpacking is another activity where The Utensils can come in handy. The design makes them ultra-packable, and although they aren't as light as expensive titanium utensils, they are lighter than standard ware and can even be attached to a pack with a carabiner. The long handles are perfect for eating out of packages of freeze dried dinners and tall pots so your hands don't get covered in sauce.

I only have two complaints about Guyot's The Utensils. First, the spoon/fork is a little large which makes it hard to eat a whole spoon full of food. Second, the nylon material feels a bit rough, which isn't a big deal but certainly doesn't feel as nice on the lips as smooth aluminum or titanium utensils.

The Utensils by Guyot Designs come in three different colors, retail for $7.95 and they “will donate 2 percent of sales to the Rocky Mountain Institute which supports sustainable business ideals.” The Utensils are also recyclable.

Overall, I think The Utensils by Guyot Designs are a worthwhile investment that will make meal times during camping trips all the more easy.
