An avalanche was set off by two teenage snowboarders above Brighton Ski Resort on Wednesday. According to KUTV 2 News, the snowboarders were in a backcountry area called Pioneer Peak off the Crest Express chairlift. One of the teens rode down the face of the mountain, setting off an avalanche that took his friend for a ride into a stand of trees that broke his snowboard in half. Both of them were checked out by ski patrol and released with minor injuries.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office said the slide was 8 feet deep, 300 feet wide and 2,000 feet long. The slide is considered a class 3 avalanche (out of 5), meaning that these teens are very lucky to be alive.
Avalanche danger was rated "high" by the Utah Avalanche Center the morning of the slide, but the snowboarders had no safety gear when they passed through the backcountry gates at Brighton.
