Solitude to be first Utah ski resort open for 09/10 season

Every winter, ski resorts pray for enough snow to be able to open before their competitors. Whether it's for promotional purposes, to please hardcore skiers who are chomping at the bit, or just for bragging rights, saying you were able to open for business before any other ski mountain is a feather in a resort's cap.

Although Utah doesn't have anything quite like the Colorado rivalry between Arapahoe Basin and Loveland (Loveland was first this year), Solitude Mountain Resort will have the distinction of being the first ski resort to open in Utah for the 2009-10 ski season when they fire up the lifts on Friday, November 6th. They already had a type of special opening on Halloween for pass holders, although the Link was the only lift running. When Solitude officially opens, Link and Moonbeam are expected to be running.

Solitude says they hope to have a 20-inch base on opening day thanks to 40 inches of snowfall in October, combined with man-made snow. An early-season lift ticket rate of $39 will be available for skiers who also are looking for bragging rights to be among the first skiers to make turns at a resort this year.
