An avalanche killed a 15-year-old boy while he was snowmobiling in the Uinta Mountains in Summit County. According to www.kutv.com, search and rescue teams were unable to reach the boy in time to save his life. He was pronounced dead at the scene Monday at 6:00pm.
The Utah Avalanche Center reports that the snowmobiler triggered the avalanche in the Moffit Basin area of the Western Uintas. They say the slab was 4-6 feet deep and 200' wide.
Avalanche danger is high all over the west as an avalanche in the Teton Village ski area in Jackson, Wyoming damaged a restaurant and ski patrol shack. In British Columbia, two avalanches killed 8 snowmobilers outside of Fernie.
Authorities urge all backcountry users that we're not out of the woods yet and that the snowpack is still very unstable. Backcountry travel is not advised but if you do go into the mountains, never go alone and always bring a beacon, shovel, probe pole, and common sense.
