A new winery might not be big news in Napa Valley or the North Fork, but it is in Hong Kong. The 8th Estate Winery, the city's first, has recently opened and the place is buzzing.
Hong Kong is actually a great place to start a winery, as the closest one is in northern China and 60 percent of all wine drinkers in Asia are from Hong Kong and China.
The fact that the crowded city has no space for growing grapes does not discourage 8th Estate. They simply buy from another country, flash freeze the grapes and import them to Hong Kong. The 2008 vintage comes from the Piedmont and Tuscany regions of Italy.
They are "bringing people to the wine rather than wine to the people" with their tasting bar and terrace. The barrel room will be open during the weekends for tastings and special events. Currently, there are 4 whites, 4 reds and 3 dessert wines available.
After you've been on your feet all day shopping, what could be better than to enjoy a nice glass of wine in an unlikely spot?
