Veteran’s Day will be celebrated tomorrow November 11, 2009 with parades, solemn ceremonies, and quiet remembrances. To honor those who have given their service or are still on active-duty, a number of restaurants, stores, amusement parks, and museums are opening their doors for free or offering discounts.
Active-duty members, retirees and veterans can get a free meal at a limited number of Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants on Veterans Day, with proof of military service. The 164 participating restaurants in 12 states are testing this promotion, which will offer one of the following entrees: House Sirloin, Riblet Basket, Fiesta Lime Chicken, Quesadilla Burger or Oriental Chicken Salad. Traditional side dishes are included. The states include: Military personnel are reporting, however, that if you live in one of the non-participating states you should still call your local Applebee’s to see if they will honor the offer.
The 2008 Military Appreciation Monday dinner will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009 from 5 pm to 9 pm in all Golden Corral Restaurants. The free “thank you” dinner is available to any person who has ever served in the United States Military. If you are a veteran, retired, currently serving, in the National Guard or Reserves, you are invited to participate in Golden Corral’s Military Appreciation Monday dinner.
All Outback Steakhouse restaurants are offering a free Bloomin’ Onion and beverage for men and women in the military (both veterans and active duty personnel) on Wednesday Nov. 11.
Zaxby's, a quick-casual restaurant chain, is offering a free meal on Wednesday Veteran’s Day to men and women in uniform (police, fire fighters, EMTs and military servicemen and women) at 11 stores in the Triangle region of North Carolina, including the cities of Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Durham. Also, these participating Zaxby's are hosting a sock drive for soldiers until Friday Nov. 13. White athletic socks are the most requested item by soldiers serving overseas. If you bring a bag of athletic socks, you will receive a free Nibbler sandwich.
Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, California is offering free admission from November 1 – 27, 2009 as its annual tribute to the military, past and present. Veterans or current serving military personnel plus one guest get in free with proper ID presented at Knott’s turnstile (DD214, Veterans Administration Hospital ID or Active Military Service ID). Purchase up to six additional tickets for just $15 each.
Lowe’s Companies, Inc. will offer all active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel and their immediate family members a 10 percent discount on in-store U.S. purchases made during the Veterans Day holiday. The discount is available Nov. 6 – Nov. 11. The discount is available on in-stock and special order purchases up to $5,000. To qualify, individuals must present a valid military ID or other proof of service. Excluded from the discount are sales via Lowes.com, previous sales, and purchases of services or gift cards.
The Home Depot is offering all active duty personnel, reservists, retired military, veterans and their families a 10 percent discount off their purchases in honor of Veteran’s Day. The offer is valid on purchases of up to $2,000 for a maximum of $200 between November 6 and November 12, 2008, at The Home Depot stores, The Home Depot Design Center locations, Yardbirds and EXPO Design Center(R) locations.
If you are in New York City, it’s your last chance to step onboard the newest member of the Naval fleet: USS New York. This ship was built with 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in her bow. On Wed. Nov. 11, 2009, the general public will be allowed to board the ship free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where she is docked at Pier 88 at 12th Avenue and West 48 Street.
There is perhaps no better way to spend Veteran’s Day than to go to a place that celebrates Veteran’s Day every day. The Eldred World War II Museum, located in Eldred, Pa, is making that gesture a little easier on the wallet this year by offering free admission on Wednesday, Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Eldred, Pa., within a few hours drive from Buffalo, N.Y., and Pittsburgh.
The Eldred World War II Museum, which opened in 1996, is dedicated to the memory of the U.S. fighting forces and the 40 million people on the home front who provided the soldiers with the materials they needed to fight. While the Borough of Eldred may not be well-known, it was the site of a British and American munitions plant during World War II. The plant produced eight million bombs, mortar shells and fuses. Workers, which numbered as many as 1,500, worked 24 hours a day from January 1942 to May 1945 in support of the war effort.
This Veteran's Day, Wednesday, November 11, the Air Zoo, a highly-charged, multi-sensory amusement park in Portage, Michigan, will honor those who have served-and those who continue to serve-our country by offering free unlimited ride wristbands to veterans and their immediate families* of all branches of the armed forces, including the Guard and Reserves.
The Air Zoo is celebrating its 30th anniversary with free general admission, which includes entrance to both the Main and East Campus, viewing all the aircraft, artifacts and artwork on display, plus admission to the 4D theater and the Space Walk. For those who would like to expand their experience even further, the rides, including the Montgolfier Balloon ride, Flying Circus Bi-Plane Ride, Full-Motion Flight Simulators, 3D Space Shuttle, Mars Adventure, Space Ball and Zero G are available for a modest charge.
* Immediate family is defined as the veteran, and those living in the same household.

To honor Native American veterans, Dr. Paul C. Rosier, associate professor of history, Villanova University, will discuss his new book Serving Their Country: American Indian Politics and Patriotism in the Twentieth Century with Dr. Mark Hirsch, American Indian Museum historian. This free event on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. will take place at the American Indian Museum in Washington, DC. Book signing will follow.
