'Tis the season. Maine High School football playoffs begin this All-Hallows Eve, but don't look for any Quarter Final upsets on the Western side of the big school slate. Local sportswriters here (Portland Press Herald) agree; the four top seeds in Class A will advance, and quite easily.
One of these four matchups is going to be a lot closer than our aforementioned experts think.
Here's how Examiner.com sees Saturday afternoon shaking out:
#8 Massabesic (4-4) at #1 Thornton Academy (8-0)
The Mustangs from Waterboro were darn lucky to get in. Their good fortune ends with a 42-13 thrashing at the hands of the Trojans, one of two unbeaten Class A teams in the entire state.
#5 Biddeford (6-2) at #4 Cheverus (6-2)
When your starting QB goes down with three games to go, and you don't miss a beat, you're good enough to play for all the marbles. But the Tigers aren't good enough to get by the Stags at home in Portland. Make it 21-7 Cheverus.
#6 Portland (5-3) at #3 Bonny Eagle (6-2)
Our so-called experts predict a big time blowout for the two-time defending champion, Scots. Not so fast. The Bulldogs bring their Big Dog, Imadhi Zagon. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound junior with track star speed and bruising power made it back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons this year. Zagon will run all day against Bonny Eagle, who couldn't stop Jack Mallis when Windham pulled the upset shutout two weeks ago. But Zagon won't be enough; Portland doesn't play defense. Scots prevail, 31-21.
#7 Sanford (6-2) at #2 Windham (7-1)
Speaking of Windham, this one is a tuneup for the Eagles, arguably, the class of the West. Give the Redskins and their senior-heavy program credit. They really turned it around after last season's horrendous 0-8 showing. The rebound ends here. Windham 30-7.
