E is for his elusive moves whenever the puck is on his stick.
E is for the economy of minutes it usually takes him to score.
And score.
And score again.
Rookie Tyler Ennis brought his E game to the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday night and notched his first three goals in the AHL to lead the Portland Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack. A hat trick in only his fifth game at the highest level of minor league hockey. Just last week he was a teenager. So much for the apprenticeship program.
Ennis, who at this time last year was on his way to back-to-back 43 goal seasons in juniors, also picked up an assist. His three goals against Hartford, the New York Rangers top farm team, came on just six shots.
Jeff Cowan scored twice - in two shots - and Nathan Gerbe added his third goal of the season to go with three assists. Not a good night for Wolf Pack goalie, Chad Johnson who only faced 24 shots.
Portland's Jhonas Enroth saved 30 of 33 shots on net.
With the win the Pirates improve to 2-3, the same record as Hartford who came in on a two-game win streak.
Portland won't be home again until October 30th. They open a five-game road trip Saturday night in New Hampshire against the Manchester Monarchs. Sunday takes them to Providence to meet the Bruins who will be looking to get even for their 4-2 loss here on Oct 10th.
