The world famous Metallica visited Michigan on November 9, 2009, in Grand Rapids. They rocked Van Andel arena, pleasing a sold-out crowd with two hours of hits from their new album as well as their more familiar legends.
Examiner Kristen Wilkerson attended this concert, enjoying her first ever Metallica concert. The performance was intensely loud, but melodic, and had a driving rhythm. The crowd, overall, was pleasant, other than the random person being removed for passing out from too much alcohol.
The show had two opening acts. The first was Volbeat, a metal band from Denmark, who played tight, energetic music, including a cover of a Johnny Cash song (quite brave given their intended audience.) The second band, Lamb of God, known for its song on Guitar Hero II, was a death metal catastrophy. While catering to a slim percentage of the audience, any highlights performed on guitars or drums was overshadowed by the continual growl of the "singer." Kristen left during the majority of the Lamb of God set, simply to escape the perpetual rumbling someplace between my ears. It turned out that other Metallica fans had the same idea as we hung out together in the hallway awaiting relief.
Finally, Metallica came on with an utterly amazing laser light show, and a tight melodic song. In response, the crowd went wild with cheering, singing, and hands waving. The set decorations including gigantic silver coffins which moved inward or outward during certain songs, sometimes shining their bright lights over the audience. The smoke machine poured smoke into the air creating a powerful ambience as the lights filtered through. The use of pyrotechnics added to the show's flair, generating excitement as the show continued.
After roughly two hours, Metallica played the dwindling notes to their most popular songs such as "One", "Enter Sandman," and "Nothing Else Matters". Overall, attending the Metallica 2009 Death Magnetic Tour provided an excellent birthday present, and created memories that this author will never forget.
