Starting Tuesday, October 6, 2009, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at American University in Washington, DC, will offer "Grandparenting: Theory and Practice" for those who wish to explore and construct new models of grandparenting better suited to today's changing world and the needs of their children and grandchildren. The study group will meet from 10:00 - 11:50 a.m. for 10 morning sessions.
Issues such as family relationships and communication, nontraditional families, life span development, children with special needs, seriously ill grandchildren, legal and financial issues will be covered.
"The Grandparents Guide: The Definitive Guide to Coping with the Challenges of Modern Grandparenting" by Arthur Kornhaber, M.D., a child and family psychiatrist and founder of the Foundation for Grandparenting, will serve as the text for this study group. An authority on grandparenting relationship issues, Dr. Kornhaber directed many intergenerational programs as well as the longest ongoing grandparenting research project, which began in 1970. Copies of the book will be available to members of the group for $10.
