Colvin Run Mill Historic Site, located just off Route 7 in Great Falls, Va., is a great place to take the grandchildren. The site's 36 acres are filled with scenery, history, and plenty to do for anyone of any age.
Of course, the old mill and the miller's house are the main attractions, especially for Fairfax County elementary school students, teachers, and field trip chaperones; but, local families have always 'favorite placed' this charming little park for picnics, feeding the ducks or quick visits to the step-back-in-time general store.
In these challenging economic times it's great to know that admission to the park is free, though there is a cost for tours and some special events.
It's easy to stay informed about upcoming events so you can plan outtings. Here's what's happening in March:
Sunday, March 1, Noon-2 p.m.: Maple Syrup Boil-Down - Learn about sugaring and how sap is reduced to syrup over an open fire. Taste maple syrup on fresh cornbread.
Sunday, March 15, 2 - 4 p.m.: Mill Run Dulcimer Band Concert - The first concert of the season.
Here's a neat idea: Talk to the Colvin Run Mill folks about their birthday party package and how to host your child or grandchild's party on the grounds.
Even if you decide to stay home this weekend and save the trip to Colvin Run Mill for another time, you can find plenty to do on the Web site. Here's just a small taste:
