Every once in a while I will post something that errs more on the side of musings based on observations than actual research. A few weeks ago I posted such an article entitled Is Social Media the "Town Square" of this age?, which generated a number of comments and emails from readers.
On Tuesday, a stunt pulled by famed Indonesian screenwriter and movie director Joko Anwar. In a complete "look at me" moment, Anwar promised his less than 1000 followers that if he managed to grab 3000 followers he would go into a Circle K naked.
Needless to say, the power of social networking made Joko Anwar eat his words. His follower count skyrocketed past his goal, and he and his friends began scheming how he would accomplish this feat.
Joko Anwar became the talk of this worldtown by performing a stunt that was seen by everyone with access to Twitter.
Consider the implications of such an act. Joko Anwar connected with thousands of people directly, and performed an act (however inappropriate) in full view of a community of millions. Social networking giant Twitter became a town square with people standing around, waiting and watching for what would happen next.
This public forum is growing more and more, and we can expect to see even more shifts in culture like this as the social media revolution progresses. Generation Y, look out…the times, they are a-changin.'
