Teachers including parents must be aware of learning styles

Did you know that when most people teach, the only one who benefits is the people who have the same learning style as the teacher? It does matter if the teacher is a parent or a teacher in a classroom setting. Are you wondering what happens to the other students? They either earn poor grades or are diagnosed with learning disabilities.

There are 3 types of learning styles: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. These are not the only ones, but the only ones we are going to look at because they cover the majority of ways people learn.  Auditory learners prefer to learn by listening. They benefit from lectures, recording lectures and reading out loud. Visual learners learn best from graphs, charts and outlines. Kinesthetic learners like to study or examine everything. It will seem as if they are slow or don’t understand anything because they want to know all the details.

Kinesthetic learner is typically diagnosed as ADD or ADHD because they are constantly moving or fidgety. These types of learners are misunderstood.

Given the fact that more and more homework is coming home, it is important to prepare for homework help, by identifying your child’s learning style. This will provide an effective and efficient way to reduce power struggles between parent and child. Also, you will be able to advocate whether or not your child has a learning disability if you have the unfortunate experience of the teacher identifying your child as the one with learning difficulties.
