Some of us tend to shy away from these chain stores like Rite-Aide, Walgreens and CVS. Most times it is because the impression is that the selection is smaller and the prices are generally higher than most items at a discount store like Walmart or Target that provide a vast selection.

There can be great savings however if you put a little effort to take a trip once in a while to your local Walgreens and hang on to a few of their coupons. The easiest way to do so is to visit their website online each week. Even if you do not live in Sacramento, you can easily find the deals of your closest Walgreens online. Find out if there is anything that you use on sale and keep in mind if you have any expiring coupons/ catalinas. Attempts will be made here to keep updated information of the best deals currently at Walgreens

Occasionally the website will have additional in store coupons. For example right now they have a printable $5 off $25 8/26-8/29/2009. Use this with all your other coupons.

Walgreens’ main saving tool is the Register Rewards. This is a catalina (a coupon that prints out right after your receipt is printed) This week for example, if you buy Pampers Jumbo Pack Diapers or Training Pants you will pay $8.99 at the register + tax. Register Rewards is stated in the white box on the flyer promoting the item for $1. After you make your payment, a coupon for $1 will print. This catalina you can use for anything in the store up till the expiration date stated on it.
Some cashiers have encouraged the purchase of the Register Reward item first as a separate transaction, and use it immediately if you have items in a second transaction on the same visit.

Things to remember.
1.The expiration date. There’s nothing like going to the trouble and wasting $10 or more because of the expiration date. Keep in your wallet as cash? Take note of that expiration date, do not assumed it is for exactly 1-2 weeks, usually it is more than 7 days. Pay attention when making payment, do not forget to use your catalinas in chatting with the cashier like i have.
2.You can combine catalinas. So this week if you buy the Pampers and get $1, and buy Zyrtec and get $7. You can save all of these and use in 1 transaction for $8 off your purchase.
3.Tax. Register Reward catalinas will not take care of tax so be prepared to shell out money for tax and include that as a consideration on your efforts
4.You cannot use Register Reward catalinas to buy an item to receive Register Rewards. So you cannot take your catalinas in this week to buy the Pampers for the purpose of getting a $1 back. You can use them and get the money off but the register will not print another reward for you.
5.You will get 1 offer per visit. So if you buy 5 Pampers in one transaction, only 1 catalina will print for $1. You will get all the catalinas for each offer in one transaction. So you will not have more than 2 transactions each trip
6.If you have other coupons, manufacturing or Walgreen store coupons, you can stack these on top for more savings. Use your coupons and the Register Rewards will still print. Last week I used $1.50 store coupon to purchase softsoap that was advertised full price Register Rewards. So even after tax, I would have been “paid” to purchase that item. Walgreens online even has a link to print manufacturing coupons from your home if you do not want to pay Sacramento Bee $2 for the Sunday paper.
7.Returns. I have not encountered what would happen if you attempted to return for a refund an item that had a Register Reward. Please see store for details.

My highlights of the week would be
1.       Kellogg’s Cereal 2 for $5 (you have to buy 2 in the same transaction) with $2 Register Reward
2.       Using my previous Register Rewards for $0.50 Arizona tea, those huge tall cans and glass bottled drinks

Usually all sales end after the shopping day on Saturday with the new ones beginning the next day on Sunday

If you are a real Walgreen fan, check out CardAvenue.com someone may be just trying to sell their Walgreen giftcard for less
