Racing fans and gamers have made Audi apps the top downloads. The Audi A4 Driving Challenge app for the iPhone is now past 3.35 million downloads and revving toward four mil. And the Audi Truth in 24 racing game app reached nearly one-half million downloads on iTunes in just one one month.
Both downloads are about Audi's winning presence on the racetrack, winning legendary endurance races at Sebring and in the American Le Mans.
Audi's racing history goes back to the 1930s. Their digital history started in 2007, when Audi became the first auto manufacturer to launch a video podcast channel on iTunes, plus tutorials designed specifically for the iPod. The tutorials let you sit in the driver's seat in your driveway and learn at your own speed about all the bells and whistles and technology in your new Audi. It's a real hands-on experience. Just like driving.
Makes sense -- like other manufacturers, recent Audi models have added console connections for your iPod or other MP3 player to sync through the speaker system. Ford actually calls its system SYNC, and it will also grab the phone numbers on your BlackBerry or iPhone for voice command dialing.
But I digress. Audi clearly is leading the automotive industry in the digital download race and gaming race, including announcing a partnership with Forza Motorsports for an R8 game, in October, for the Xbox 360. Probably will be as popular as the groundbreaking Audi A4 Driving Challenge application, which made placing the brand as the first auto brand to launch an application for the iPhone.
The A4 game already has received received Top 10 "Game of the Year" honors from Apple and earned millions of mentions on blogs and social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Plus those 3.35 million iTunes downloads. Free download. Did I mention that yet? Free iTunes download. Maybe that has something to do with its popularity. Ya think?
The Truth in 24 iTunes game is really a promo for the documentary on Audi in the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The game is a realistic Le Mans course, with opposing racecars and strategic pit stop decisions in a 3D environment. All in the palm of your hand.
The Truth in 24 documentary airs nationally on the Speed Network on Friday, June 12 at 9 p.m. EST. It features the 2008 Audi Racing team, lots of interviews with drivers and lots of what looks to me like helmet-cam footage from inside the racecars on the track. Just hold on to your head on the turns so you don't get whiplash. The Audi-mentary was produced by NFL Films/Intersport.
