A few weeks ago Seattle Women's Fitness Examiner explored whether or not Curves for Women was really an effective workout. What studies have found is that different clubs tend to score much higher or lower in calories burned in a workout, ranging from ACE's 184 calories in the 30 minutes, to Baylor University's 300 calories. Baylor's study, however, specifically showed that results between clubs were very disparate, and were based on several key factors: staff expertise, talking during workout, and CurvesSmart. Curves for Women clubs in the greater Seattle area will be visited and reviewed each week, evaluating how they do in each of these factors, as well as to offer general insight into the personality and accessibility of the location. This week Crown Hill Curves was reviewed.

Facility: Crown Hill Curves is north of Greenwoo at 10033 Holman Rd NW, Seattle, WA‎ . It is a very bright and clean facility, with all the regular Curves equipment, plus a stretching unit. It is super fun to use and at no point to have to lay on the floor to get stretched out. The only inconvenience is that the circuit is not entirely visible from the front desk, so employees have to come out to watch the members. Water is available for $1 and there is a take-one leave-one bookshelf.

Staff Expertise: The staff at this facility are very good. They readily answered health and fitness related questions. Because of the placement of the desk, an employee doing paperwork missed a few times when a machine was used incorrectly, but once on the floor she was alert to members' needs and actively participated in the members' workouts.

Chatting: Chatting too much can be a big problem in a place like this, where it becomes as much about the socializing as it does about the calorie-burning. If you are going for the social aspect, don't worry about it. If, however, you really want an intense, fat-burning half hour, it is best to talk as little as possible. The staff and members were talkative, but not overly so. While chatty, they were sensitive to members workout needs. I would suggest letting them know that you prefer to concentrate on your workout over talking.

Curves Smart: Crown Hill Curves is equipped with the newest Curves technology: CurvesSmart. This is a computer program that allows you to track your workout results, as well as receive "coaching" while on the circuit. The addition of a stretching machine, and the emphasis on including it in your workout is also a smart choice!

Recommendation: The Seattle Women's Fitness Examiner would recommend this facility to women at any level of fitness, with the caveat that you chat very little. I would also suggest that members not familier with the circuit request the staff to accompany them on the circuit, since they cannot be seen from the desk. Due to good staff involvement, the availability of CurvesSmart and a stretching machine, this facility seems to model the elements that can make a Curves workout successful.
