San Pedro Beach in Ambergris Caye, Belize   Trip Advisor

Here's the ultimate in off the beaten path travel- Ambergris Caye, Belize. If you enjoy snorkeling or diving and unusual, offbeat travel to laid back places, you may want to consider Ambergris Caye, Belize. This charming island has streets of sand, and since no cars are allowed on the island, the popular mode of transportation is golf carts. If you enjoy the exercise, you can also ride bikes and walk to most locations on the island. In addition to the snorkeling/diving there are many other unique excursions and things to do. There are sailing and kayaking excursions, as well as nature and wildlife/birdwatching trips. You can also take day sails to other nearby cayes like Caye Caulker. I found the residents of San Pedro Town in Ambergris Caye (pronounced KEY) to be unusually friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is offbeat, funky and comfortable. You won't find the flashy tourism of the Mexico resort towns here!  This article will give you a quick description of Ambergris Caye, and I'll follow later this week with articles on Things to Do  Places To Stay and popular Restaurants.

I read a great description of the San Pedro, Ambergris Caye experience from the Guidebook,"San Pedro Cool" by Lan Sluder. This article is what prompted me to take my family to Ambergris Caye on a vacation. We loved this inexpensive, low-key, unusual island and want to return there! Here's the description: Want a comfortable, shorts-and sandals seaside vacation, at a moderate price? Just a bit off the beaten path but not too far, where the seafood is fresh and the beer is cold? Where the tap water won’t make you sick? An island with most of the modcons without the plastic tackiness, with decent diving, excellent snorkeling, beautiful water and pretty fair beaches? Where local folks are friendly and hablan English, though they may speak Spanish at home? A spot with dependably beautiful weather most of the time? Then you’ll enjoy Ambergris Caye!  Yep... that  was what I was looking for.

How to Get to Belize: The country of Belize can be reached on direct flights (about a three hour flight from Atlanta). Belize offers majestic beauty inland with rainforests, rivers, and cave systems. There are gorgeous beaches and island scenery on the island of Ambergris Caye and in other coastal  parts of the country. To get to the island, you fly into Belize City, and then take a short 20 minute flight to Ambergris Caye. The transfer flight is itself an awesome excursion with fabulous views of the Caye from the plane. You may want to consider staying a day on the mainland (to check out the rainforests, zip lining or cave tubing) before flying to Ambergris Caye.

Where is Belize? Belize is located in Central America, bordered on the North by the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, on the west and south by Guatemala and to the east by the Caribbean Sea.  Ambergris Caye was once a part of Mexico so its scenery is vastly similar to that found in southern Mexico. Plant life consists of Mangroves, many small shrubs and of course, Palm trees.

Language:The official language of Belize is English and most islanders speak and understand English but the main language is still Spanish.
San Pedro Town: San Pedro is the only town on the island of Ambergris Caye and is about one and a half miles long and in some places about a mile wide. Ambergris Caye is a food lovers' paradise. Local food consists of the Belizean favorites like rice and beans, stewed chicken and potato salad. Local foods are influenced by the Spanish and Mexicans with dishes such as Tacos, Bollos, Tamalitos, Tamales and Burritos. Of course Seafood is bountiful and includes lobster, conch, and a variety of fish, mussels, and scallops. San Pedro is loaded with restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels along the beach. You can find most things you you need within walking distance. You should stay in or near San Pedro (the North or South ends of town are great if you want a little seclusion). If you want to explore further, you can rent a golf cart!

For More Information: You will find everything you need to know about San Pedro in the practical and informative guide "San Pedro Cool" . Watch for articles on Ambergris Caye that will follow later this week on What to do, Where to stay and Restaurants. This trip suggestion is definitely off the beaten path, and you can find great trip rates to Ambergris Caye during the summer.
