We are just 6 days away from that one day of the year when people consume more at one meal than what many people consume in 3 days. If you think that figure might be around 4000 calories, you would be wrong. The typical person consumes between 5000 and 6000 calories at this holiday meal. Wow!
To put that in terms that are easier to understand, for a person on a 1400-calorie daily plan, that equates to 4 1/4 days of meals! To put it in terms of working off those calories, that 6000-calorie meal equates to 26 half-hour sessions on a treadmill walking at 4 mph. Another wow! If you only exercise a half hour each day, it would take you nearly a month of additional exercise to work off what you ate at that one meal. That alone should scare anyone into not overeating that day.
Today's "The Doctors TV" had a promo for this coming Monday's show, which is a holiday survival guide for not gaining weight. Jillian Michaels from "The Biggest Loser" will also be on that show. A graphic animation was shown of what happens to your stomach. (It was not pretty.) In short, it makes you want to be sure your have programmed your TV to record the show. (In the ABQ market, it is on channel 13 CBS at 9 a.m.)
One of the best ways to not leave the table in pain and feeling like you are going to burst is to eat out at a restaurant that does NOT have a buffet. Buffets can be very expensive. The one planned at the local Hilton is $30. That's a lot of money for food that is not expensive to begin with, and where you have to get up to get your own anyway! (Yes, you are paying for more than just the food, but you get my point.) When something like that costs a lot, some people feel they need to eat a lot to "get their money's worth." Besides, you can't take home leftovers from a buffet. In short, buffets are not your friend if you are trying to lose weight, unless your ability to control yourself is on max alert!.
A better option would be to pick a restaurant that does not have a buffet, where you choose from a menu (a fixed menu for holidays, usually), and the meal is served to you. One place that does that is Mimi's (in ABQ, at the I-25 Way, between Jefferson and Montgomery on the west side of I-25). On Thanksgiving Day they will be serving a 3-course meal, with your choice of entrees, for just $15. As with any restaurant these days, you can be sure the servings will be ample. So for those who think that the best part of eating at home is having leftovers for sandwiches the next day, not to worry--you will still be able to get at least one other meal out of what you are served, based on traditional restaurant portions.
So, if you are not going to someone's house for Thanksgiving (which will give you the same results as a buffet at a restaurant), be wise on where you do choose to eat.
