It was a close call this week for Victor Smalley, one of Miami's own who is in the Top 20 performers on So You Think You Can Dance this season. Victor danced contemporary with Bianca Revels this week, to a tune from "The Color Purple" and choreographed by Tyce Diorio. Unfortunately that dance number landed both dancers in the Bottom 4 this week.
But Victor definitely danced for his life--and beautifully so--keeping him on the show for at least another week. Of all the dancers in the bottom 4, I thought Victor did the best and absolutely deserved to stay in the competition. It's surprising to learn that he only began dancing 5 short years ago.
Another Miami dancer, Jonathan "Legacy" Perez, the B-Boy that isn't afraid to show his emotions, is growing leaps and bounds in just a few short weeks according to Judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy. He was a judge favorite this week as he danced outside of his comfort zone in a contemporary piece where he portrayed Fear--and he transitioned amazingly from B-Boy to a smooth operator. Although I noticed choreographer Stacey Tookey managed to include a few break-dance moves into the number, which were nicely woven in.
Legacy was born in Brooklyn, but apparently lived in Miami before heading to L.A. to pursue his dancing dreams. In his profile on SYTYCD, he states, "I came from Miami to become someone that can inspire all. I love acting, dancing, making music, artistry of all sorts. Movement is my life."
And so it should be, for both of these contestants. Boys, you're both making Miami proud!
