The first Amber Alert issued in the State of Maine occurred yesterday morning in response to an abduction of a little girl from Sanford, Maine. The child, Hailey Traynham, is two years old and was taken by her father, Gary Traynham, age 38, after he assaulted the child's mother. It was believed that Traynham was in the New Hampshire Lakes Region this afternoon. However, Amber Alerts were issued in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York since Traynham was last believed to be in Vermont.
The Amber Alert was canceled a short time ago when the child and the father were found in Milton, New Hampshire. The child appears to be safe, according to news reports. The father was also arrested.
The Amber Alert was the first alert issued in the State of Maine since the Amber Alert program took effect seven years ago. In order for Maine to issue an Amber Alert, the abducted child must be seventeen years old or younger, and authorities must believe that the child is in imminent danger of death or serious injury. Additionally, law enforcement officials must believe that in issuing an Amber Alert the child would have a better chance of being found. Because of the vicious assault upon Hailey's mother, coupled with the child's abduction, the State issued the alert.
Hailey was taken from her residence at 11:15 Monday. The alert was canceled just shortly after 5:00 p.m. EST.
