Remember when Obama threw David Paterson under the bus in an attempt to push the governor out of his bid for re-election?
Well, Governor Paterson isn’t taking it lying down. First Paterson’s wife reacted by responding by questioning Obama’s black bonafides, wondering aloud about the propriety of the first black President cutting off at the knees the first black New York governor.
Now Paterson is actively trying to distance himself from the increasingly unpopular President, gleefully slamming the Obama administration for its controversial decision to hold Guantanamo terror trials in New York City – which has raised the odious possibility of the terrorists being released in America if the trials go wrong and their lawyers successfully manipulate the vagaries of our notoriously unpredictable American justice system. Said Paterson:
"This is not a decision that I would have made. I think terrorism isn't just attack, it's anxiety and I think you feel the anxiety and frustration of New Yorkers who took the bullet for the rest of the country. Our country was attacked on its own soil on September 11, 2001 and New York was very much the epicenter of that attack. Over 2,700 lives were lost. It's very painful. We're still having trouble getting over it. We still have been unable to rebuild that site and having those terrorists so close to the attack is gonna be an encumbrance on all New Yorkers."
Paterson’s comments jibe with those of Republicans – like former New York mayor and 9/11 hero Rudy Giuliani – who believe that trying terrorist masterminds in New York is a bad idea giving the terrorists constitutional rights not usually offered to enemy combatants in wartime and thus opening the door for their release on constitutional technicalities – especially if any aspect of their arrest and detention is found to be unconstitutional.
Even Obama’s Secretary of State – the hawkish progressive Hillary Rodham Clinton – declined express enthusiasm for the decision, saying merely that she would not “second-guess” it. Ouch.
Were these terrorists read their rights? Was the evidence against them legally obtained? Were they tortured while in detention?
And will a judge be forced to release them on these or similar grounds?
If the Paterson and Giuliani contingent is correct and the trials go haywire, America will be in serious trouble. And the Obamacratic Party will be destroyed. May God forbid it.
