Setting reasonable goals is important for success.

Oprah Winfrey recently admitted that she'd fallen off the wagon and she is now 200 lbs.  The Center for Disease Control commented that her BMI (body mass index) is in the obese range at 31.  This means more than just having to get clothes at the large size shop.  With this high BMI comes a great increase in her risks for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke and even early death.  It is imperative that Oprah get back on that wagon and lose some of this weight.  Even a 10% decrease in her weight could lower her risks for disease significantly.

So how did she get to this point?   She confided publically that she struggles with a food addiction.  Even with all the resources available to her like a personal chef, personal trainer and  the best in health care, she still crumbled in the face of her addiction.  That's pretty powerful stuff!  It will be interesting to see how she gets her weight under control again.  She has stated that she is not really interested in becoming "skinny", but her focus is going to be on getting healthy again.  That sounds like a very reasonable goal that will be attainable if she can stay on track.

Setting a resonable goal is very important for everyone wanting to lose weight.  Very few people have the deep down level of commitment it takes to get the "super body".  Expecting to get these results without that committment and hard work sets us up for failure.  In the dispair of this failure, the important goal of better health may be lost  due to quitting the program.  As I tell my all my clients, there is nothing wrong with setting a goal to be a healthy weight even if it means you will be a size 10 instead of a size 2.  It is a matter of priorities.  For many, food is a very important part of their family life and their culture.  The family celebrations center around food.  In the long run it may be more important for you to attend the after church family luncheon every Sunday and feast on all your family favorites than to have to give it up all for the sake of 6 pack abs.  Like I said before, just a 10% reduction in bodyweight can significantly improve your health and risk factors for obesity related disease.   So, good luck , Oprah!  Set your sites on better health and get to work!  We support you!
