On Saturday, September 19, 2009, the Houston Yacht Club hosted the Special Olympics State Championship for Sailing. Sailing is considered a unified sport. This means that Special Olympics athletes are paired with normal sailors for training and competition.
Four Flying Scot boats from the Corinthian Sailing Club, in Dallas participated. This included nine Duncanville Special Olympic Program athletes along with four members of the Flying Scot Fleet 23. Additionally, Houston Yacht Club had 2 level 1 boats and 2 level 2 boats.

There are 5 official levels of Special Olympics sailing:
Level 1: The Unified Partner skippers the boat and the Special Olympian handles headsail trim.
Level 2: The Special Olympian skippers at least 50% of the time.
Level 3: Special Olympians sail with a coach on board. The coach can only provide verbal instructions.
Level 4: Special Olympians sail with no coach on board.
Level 5: Singlehanded
The results showed the Duncanville Sailors performed incredibly with the following results:
Level 3:
Gold: Kendrick Lawrence as skipper, with Aaron Hudson as crew and Steve Comen the unified Partner serving as coach.
Level 2
Gold: Jeff Traub, Curtis Brown and Red Dog Jones as the unified partner.
Silver: Danny Williams, Chris McGee and Roland Foerster as the unified partner
Level 1:
Gold: Maria Pastana, Anna Uvalle, Anthony Pachecco and Masie Comen as the unified partner.
Congratulations to all the athletes!
