According to The New York Times, Momofuku has gone to the dogs. The pork bones used to make stock for their famous Ramen are being donated to shelters around New York City.
Christina Tosi, the pastry chef of many of the Momfukus, said the idea came after Animal Rights activists petitioned the restaurant because of their use of foie gras. An animal lover and dog owner herself, she did some soul searching. While the menu stayed the same, she felt that giving back to the animal community in some way would boost their stance on animal welfare. She figured the bones used for stock would do more good in the bellies of stray and abadoned dogs than in the garbage.
While this is a genuine gesture, I am concerned about the welfare of these shelter dogs. As a dog owner myself, I was told by my vet that feeding dogs ANY cooked bones is dangerous. Cooked bones can easily splinter and slice open the digestive tract. Hopefully the shelters are looking into the condition of the bones before they are given to the dogs.
