Scappoose teen cited after rear-ending St. Helens Police vehicle

ST. HELENS — A Scappoose teen was cited for Careless Driving after crashing into the back of a St. Helens Police vehicle on Nov. 3. The officer, Jon Eggers, and his K-9, “Bosco” were not injured, nor was the Scappoose driver, Brian Maloney.
The original crash, a non-injury crash involving a motorcycle and deer, occurred just before 7 p.m. Eggers was assisting the Oregon State Police at the scene of that crash, when his patrol car was struck by a car driven by 19-year-old Maloney.
At 6:58 p.m. OSP Senior Trooper Randy Fargher arrived on scene of a minor crash involving a motorcycle and deer in the westbound lanes of Highway 30 near milepost 27. The non-injury crash only resulted in headlight damage to the motorcycle.
At 7:03 p.m., Eggers and Bosco arrived to assist. Eggers had parked his patrol car in the left eastbound lane with overhead emergency lights on to divert traffic to the right hand lane. As Eggers stood at the rear of his vehicle, using his flashlight to direct traffic, a 1992 Mazda Protégé driven by Brian Maloney, 19, from Scappoose, approached in the left eastbound lane at traveling between 30 and 35 miles per hour.

According to a press release by the Oregon State Police, Eggers saw the approaching car and ran to the highway shoulder as the Protégé crashed into the back of his patrol car.
No one was injured.

Maloney was cited for Careless Driving.
According to St. Helens Police Lieutenant Terry Moss, Eggers has been with the St. Helens Police Department for more than seven years.
