KELSO — Darren McLeod may have taken the search for cell phone service to new heights on Oct. 23.
The 32-year-old Clatskanie resident was arrested by Kelso Police after a passerby called to report that there was a man at the top of the Cowlitz Way Bridge, an estimated 70 feet above the river, according to Kelso Patrol Captain Darr Kirk.
“He was trying to hide from us, laying down when he saw us,” Kirk said. “When he came down, he tried to run from us and we cited him for the offense.”
Kirk said that McLeod told officers he was searching for better cellular service as he talked to his father, but that he didn’t have a cell phone on him when he was taken into custody.
The amount of time McLeod spent on top of the bridge before anyone noticed him there is unknown, Kirk said, but the man wasn’t “up there very long once the police got there.”
According to information obtained from the Cowlitz County Jail web site, McLeod was booked at the Cowlitz County Jail on a misdemeanor charge. The Longview Daily News reported that McLeod was booked on charges of Suspicion of Unlawful Use of a Bridge (Climbing). This offense carries a $250 fine.
“It’s an ordinance that any city with a bridge like that has. You can’t climb on the top of the bridges,” Kirk said.
