While Colorado Sheriff Jim Alderden has indicated that it may take a week for charges to be filed against Richard Heene for his role in the alleged balloon hoax, a former associate of Heene's gives some insight into the balloon saga.
Robert Thomas appeared on NBC's "Today" and described the balloon boy's dad as "a very creative individual. Hyperactive … driven by fame and promoting himself."
When Thomas saw the news footage of the balloon floating in the sky on Thursday, Thomas he thought, "Who would possibly do something like this? It has to be Richard Heene."
Thomas has been questioned by Colorado authorities based on e-mails between the two discussing a similar stunt months ago.
He went public with the claim that Heene was planning a media stunt to promote a proposed reality show is the desired interview subject of police investigators.
Thomas reportedly sold his story to Gawker.com. E-mails between Thomas and Heene were posted on the site.
"This will be the most significant UFO-related news event to take place since the Roswell Crash of 1947, and the result will be a dramatic increase in local and national awareness about The Heene Family, our Reality Series, as well as the UFO Phenomenon in general," read the show's proposal provided by Thomas.
