President Obama made a moving speech at the Fort Hood memorial service Tuesday for the 13 people killed last week at Fort Hood Army base in Texas. Obama said that the legacy of the dead will live beyond their incomprehensible slayings. Family members wore white ribbons and were escorted to their seats for the service. In front of the stage, there was a small display set up for each solider who died in last week’s shooting, each station included their service photo, helmet, boots and gun.
President Obama mentioned each of the 13 soldiers by name and gave a brief description of each. Obama said to the families of the dead that "no words can fill the void that has been left." He added, "Your loved ones endure through the life of our nation."
"Their life's work is our security, and the freedom that we too often take for granted. Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town; every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - that is their legacy," the President Obama said.
"This is a time of war. And yet these Americans did not die on a foreign field of battle," Obama said. "They were killed here, on American soil, in the heart of this great American community. It is this fact that makes the tragedy even more painful and even more incomprehensible.” See video below of President Obama's speech at the Fort Hood memorial service.
Malik Nadal Hasan allegedly killed 13 people last week in a mass shooting on Fort Hood Army base, and wounded 28 others. Hasan was shot several times in the exchange and has been in the hospital, over the weekend he was removed from a ventilator. And when he awoke Monday he asked for a lawyer and refused to speak to investigators. Charges have not been filed, and authorities have been unable to identify a motive for the shootings.
Two of the victims from the shooting at Fort Hood were from Utah; one soldier is dead and the other is in the hospital. Aaron Thomas Nemelka, from West Jordan, Utah died at the scene. Joey Foster from Ogden, Utah was shot in the hip during the shootings. Both families are in shock and stated that they don’t understand how something like this could happen on a military base.
