Michelle and President Obama head to Fort Hood today for a memorial service for the victims of last week’s shooting. The memorial service is planned to begin at 1:00 pm central time. 3,000 people are expected to attend today’s memorial service on the Fort Hood Army base. Obama’s visit is planned for four hours, in which they will first meet with the families of the 13 victims that died.
In the memorial service, Obama will address the Fort Hood community the memorial service. General George Casey, the Army Chief of Staff is also scheduled to speak. The service also includes a sermon, a roll call of the names of the dead and a 21-gun salute.
In a brief statement released last week, Obama expressed outrage over the deaths and said that the government is taking steps to prevent this from happening in the future. He also praised the courage of a few soldiers who were responsible for bringing down the alleged shooter, Nidal Malik Hasan.
After the service, Obama plans to meet with the 28 wounded soldiers and their families, before flying back to Washington.
Two of the victims from the shooting at Fort Hood were from Utah; one soldier is dead and the other is in the hospital. Aaron Thomas Nemelka, from West Jordan, Utah died at the scene. Joey Foster from Ogden, Utah was shot in the hip during the shootings. Both families are in shock and stated that they don’t understand how something like this could happen on a military base.
