This is the fourth in our series of articles on the Filoli Estate in Woodside, California. Our first visit to the historic mansion and the spectacular gardens was in January. During each successive visit, we have watched the 16 acres of painstakingly tended gardens slowly come to life.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 10am to 3:30pm, Filoli will open its house and gardens for its annual Spring Fling. Anticipated for months, the popular event will feature a virtual explosion of colors from hundreds of vibrant spring flowers.

There will be activities and events for kids of all ages including watching highly trained canines navigate obstacle courses – and observing adorable guide dog puppies being put through their paces. There will also be two handsome alpacas for viewing and a dwarf horse for petting.

In addition to the animals, look for arts and crafts activities such as face painting and an opportunity to decorate and plant flowerpots, which the children can take home and nurture.

Don’t miss the puppet show in the main ballroom, and a magic show presented by Brian Scott.

The mansion will be decked out in numerous ornate and stunning floral displays created by the Filoli staff and volunteers, and the Andrew Dudnick jazz ensemble, along with a strolling coral group, will add music to the festive event.

For the plant aficionados there will be docents throughout the gardens to answer questions about the numerous flowers, shrubs, and trees that decorate the property.

Filoli is one of the few remaining early 20th century elegant country estates and gardens, and the only one located in California. The 36,000 square foot mansion is furnished with period antiques and interesting collectables.

Filoli was constructed as a private residence in 1917 and opened to the public in 1976 as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The specific Filoli charter is to promote cultural and horticultural endeavors.

There is never a bad time to visit Filoli, but spring is extra special. Check out the pictures in the slideshow. They were taken one week ago. The gardens are even lovelier now.

Filoli is located 30 miles south of San Francisco, on Canada Road, in Woodside, California. Take scenic highway 280 and look for signs to Filoli near the Edgewood Road exit.
Reservations are highly recommended.  Check here for more information.
