Every winter, Des Moines is visited by many of what is possibly the most famous bird in America - the Bald Eagle. Residents can see this bird every year from approximately November through February at any place along side the Des Moines River. These majestic birds migrate to the (believe it or not) warmer climate of Des Moines in order to hunt for fish and other small animals.
Unfortunately, the birds do not stay to raise their young in the spring. Alas, they return to their breeding grounds in the mountainous and more northern regions. There, they will build upon the same nest that they used the previous year. In fact, some nests or used for decades, and can weigh hundreds of pounds!
For avid birdwatchers, or morning commuters, the chance to see our country's symbol of freedom is a special winter treat sure to take your mind off of the chilly air.
