You don't have to persuade me to appreciate my clitoris—I do it daily. Still, it's always fun to learn something new about the female fun button. So check out these enlightening clitoris facts, then peruse this delightful companion article by my friend and fellow examiner Tinamarie Bernard.

CLITORIS FACTS TO WARM YOUR HEART (AMONGST OTHER BODY PARTS):

Behold, the clitoris! (like I could print the real thing)

*The clitoris is only present in female mammals (take that, orange-bellied frog!).

*Fifty to 75 percent of women who have orgasms require clitoral stimulation and are unable to have an orgasm through intercourse alone.

*Some infant girls, due to genetics or high androgen levels in the womb, are born with a clitoris that looks similar to a penis. These girls are perfectly healthy, but parents often opt to have their child’s clitoris cut off or surgically reduced out of fear, embarrassment, or the mindset that they’re “correcting a mistake.”

*Only a small portion of the clitoris can be seen by the naked eye. The average clitoris is around four inches in length (similar to a flaccid penis) but three fourths of it is hidden from view within a female’s body.

*Clitoris size increases throughout a woman’s life. During puberty the clitoral glans becomes 1.5 times larger, and after menopause the clitoris can become 2.5 times larger than it was at age 19.

*While most large clitorises are the result of genetics, other factors can lead to a size increase. Steroids—both prescription and non-prescription—can result in increased clitoral size. There are medical reports of clitorises reaching a length of about 2 ½ inches due to steroid use.

*Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a disturbing practice that occurs in countries throughout the world, and involves the often unaesthetized cutting away of external genitals. In some instances, the vulva is then sewn shut, leaving only a miniscule opening for urine and menstrual fluids to pass through. The procedures are rarely performed by medical professionals, occur under extremely unsanitary conditions, and often result in injury, infection, and even death. Some girls are mutilated by actual doctors, which may reduce the risk of complication, but still leaves the girls without the pleasure of their external sexual organs. The mindset spurring these procedures is that intact genitals are “impure.” Multiple human rights groups are working to end this practice, which occurs even in industrialized countries.

*The clitoral glans contains 8,000 highly sensitive nerve endings, double the nerve endings as the analogous organ in males, the glans penis. To summarize: guys have less nerve endings, women have childbirth—it evens out.
