Dr. Vic Narurkar is kind of a big deal. Besides being a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University and Stanford Medical School, he is one of the nation's leading dermatologists and founder of the Bay Area Laser Institute. He has written over forty publications, and is on the Editorial board of several journals. So when I had the opportunity to talk with him about the new lash growing product, Latisse, I jumped at the chance. He sat down with me and answered all of my questions.
Dr. Narurkar, what made you decide to offer Latisse to your patients?
"What compelled me was the evidence from the clinical trial that was conducted over a sixteen week period...and the results of those clinical trials were presented at our dermatology conferences, and what showed with the application of Latisse, when they followed patients for sixteen weeks, the number one thing was the increase in the prominence of the eyelashes, and then they measured the percentage of the growth and thickness, so they grew not only longer, but thicker and darker." Dr. Narurkar went on to say " What compelled me more than just the evidence, as a doctor and scientist, was my patients. I was truly amazed at the demand for fuller, thicker eyelashes. Also, there was a clinical trial done to establish the safety of the product."
You mentioned safety. Are there any certain risks that are associated with using Latisse?
"The clinical trials established Latisse to be a very safe medication. However, less than four percent of patients who used it in the trials had incidents of a little bit of redness and itching, which was resolved. About three percent ma experience hyperpigmentation of the eyelid, which is completely reversible. The one side effect which patients seem to always be concerned about, which has never been reported by users of Latisse, but has been reported by users of LUMIGAN, an active ingredient in Latisse, can cause brown pigmentation in the iris in less than two percent of patients "
So, how do I apply Latisse?
"We advise patients to remove contact lenses and any eye makeup fifteen minutes prior to application of Latisse. Since the active ingredient in Latisse is a medication made specifically for use in the eye, you do not have to worry if you accidentally get Latisse in your eyes. However, if you inadvertantly get the product on skin outside the eyelash, you want to rinse it off. It is applied with a brush directly to the lashline."
When should I expect results?
"The earliest that you will see a significant lengthening and thickening of the eyelashes is in about six weeks, so a lot of my patients will purchase two, one month kits, so they are good for about eight weeks."
What else should we know about Latisse?
"Latisse is the only FDA approved material shown to actually grow eyelashes. So they should be aware that the product has undergone very rigorous clinical trials, both for efficacy and safety. Nothing else out there has been approved by the FDA for the condition we call "hypotrichosis", or inadequate lashes."
