For my last segment on the month of November I’ll focus on the fact that November is also Child Safety and Protection Month!  While you’re getting your espresso, thinking about adoption, and telling your story to your family and friends, why don’t you also take a few minutes to think about the protection of your children or the children in your life?

In this day and age of the vast resources of the Internet, there are thousands of websites you can visit to catch up on the latest ideas about child safety.  There are sites that can provide information about preventing accidents, keeping your child out of harms way when it comes to daily activities, as well as information on small but effective ways to always be on the look out for potentially dangerous situations for your child.

Physical dangers aside, there are a few things that I feel can be categorized as child safety precautions and they are summed up with one word: time.  Spending time with the children in your life – whether it is your son or daughter, or just a child you know – is one of the most effective and proactive things you can do to affect their life.  Spending time with a child shows them that you care, that you love them, and that you are there for them.

A few ideas for spending time with kids are:

1) Do things they like - Sit down and color with them.  Go play Frisbee outside with them.  Watch an animated movie with them.
2) Listen to them - If you’re the one doing the talking all the time how will you know what they are thinking?  They have valid problems and will learn to respect you as well if they see that you care about what they are saying.
3) Be patient - Smaller hands and shorter legs mean it may take a bit more time to go somewhere or do something.  Be patient and don’t plan anything that may interfere with your time.
4) Love - Just like you and I, kids respond to love.  Show them that you love them.  Ask them how you can pray for them.  Love them like Jesus tells us to love everyone, and show them how to love.  Just because kids are younger doesn’t mean they can't learn valuable lessons now.  You could be instrumental in radically changing a child’s life just by teaching them how to love.

So, go and have some fun with the children that are in your life!  Share the love of Christ with them, and teach them what it means to be a Christian and how to live like one.

LA tip of the day: Watch out for the Swine Flu!!  Make sure to wash your hands often and keep them away from your face during the day.  Be considerate of others as well - cover your sneezes.  Stay healthy!
