The introduction of November brings with it a sense of family, of home, and of coming together. It is befitting that November would also be dubbed as National Adoption Awareness Month. What better way to celebrate family than giving a child with no connections a place to call home?
Aside from actually adopting a child, there are many ways in which we can celebrate adoption. On the National Adoption Awareness Month website, there is an entire section dedicated to explaining ways in which we can celebrate adoption. They suggest supporting an adoption foundation, writing a letter to the local newspaper explaining an experience with adoption, and using positive adoption language along with a few other options outlined on their site.

Part of the purpose for creating awareness of adoption is so that the children currently located in foster care would be recognized. In a sense, the month of November is dedicated to children who would love the chance to have a home and a family. It is easy to pass through life surrounded by our own lives in the areas that make us comfortable. We have our families, our jobs, our friends, and very few times do we step aside and truly notice what goes on around us.
As Christians it is our duty to look after orphans and widows in our abundance like it says in James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” How do you read this verse? “It is our duty sometimes” or “it is our duty”. Do you think this verse means it is someone else’s duty? What are some of the reasons you give for not adopting? Do they hold up when measured against what God instructs us?

It is easy for us to remain comfortable in our lives, and yes, some of us cannot afford or are not in a place to adopt – that’s fine! The real issue though, is whether God is instructing us not to adopt at this point in time or if we are the ones that have closed that door.
To celebrate this month, take some time today and pray about adoption – maybe it’s in your future, and maybe its not, but there is always a way to help!
