For years Huntington Beach has struggled to find a seat at the great Southern California table, and has been almost to a restaurant shut out. Is a restaurant an "event." Ask your stomach. Of course it is. And of course there are the pretenders: the overpriced, the over-saturated; and the underwhelming. None of them are worthy of the appellation: "event."

Beach goers take note. We are now on the map. In addition to Jacqs, we now have Slow Fish at the unlikely corner of Edinger and Bolsa Chica. Yes, another excellent eatery hidden behind the facade of a strip mall.

The Slow Fish menu is to die for. Of course that is over used jargon for way cool grub. Essentially the menu is decided into two camps.

Small plates and salads allow you to savor just the right assortment of Wolfgang Puck eat-your-heart-out appetizers such as the "SLOW" starter. It's a combo. Three house specialties. Their delectable "Fat Avo" made of a perfectly skinned avocado stuffed with seared tuna glazed with a mysterious rich translucency. Umm. The Jala tuna: ever so lightly fired, non-fire breathing jalapeño peppers dolloped with a seared tuna and cream cheese blend. Yippee. And last but not least. Ascon. What can a mere mortal such as I who has loved steamed asparagus all my life say about, well, one incredibly "rumaki-like" bacon-wrapped spear diced into four perfectly al dente sections. If there are three of you, someone will inevitably fight you for the fourth piece. Or should. Unless they give it up willingly which is unlikely. These small plate aficionados enjoy the house salad best of all. Simple, carrot peels, fresh lettuce, a vinaigrette to, uh, savor like a fine wine.

The second camp salivates for "Big Plates." One might equate "big" plates with robust manly dishes. But no. These are unisex. Big girls can enjoy the big plates too. Most I know order the "SLOW" beef tender rib. The menu states that this is "Chef Ari's" award winning braised tender ribs. Indeed, they are marinated in something mysterious, smoky and dark. Flavors amplify the sultry taste that melts in your mouth. Yes. It is the house favorite of everyone who enters their doors. Yes, you will order it more than once.

Lest we speak only of food, let me describe the mood, room, ambiance. This is the kind of place you duck into on a chilly night on NYC's Broadway. Just before or after show time. The decor is tres sophisticated; the music jazzy, blues, or some classical equivalent. The service is excellent; the wait staff attentive if not doting. Parking is free in front of the restaurant.. Monday and Tuesday nights corkage is free. Everything is excellent. Leave room for dessert.

Go this week. Hungry? Go now. Don't wait. You won't be disappointed.
