On Monday September 21st, Shayna Steele kicked off her US tour in support of her breakthrough full-length debut, I'll Be Anything. Shayna Steele's CD Release show takes place at Yoshi's in San Francisco, CA on November 12th, 2009.
Shayna Steele can boast an industry resume as long as your arm. The singer/songwriter has acquired many labels from “Broadway crooner” to “disco screamer,” “Chaka Khaner” to “R&B belter,” and “jazz chanteuse” to “electro diva.” While each denotes a unique facet of her talent, no one term is able to capture the whole. With her latest album, Steele delivers her most confident and cohesively eclectic set to date, answering the question “Who is Shayna Steele?” with a definitive (and defiant) I'll Be Anything.
Shayna dove headfirst into music at an early age, winning several pageants and talent shows, including an appearance on Ed McMahon's Star Search at age 15. Her artistic ambitions eventually led her to New York in 1996, where after just three months, her dynamic voice and fierce delivery landed her a role as the first replacement in the Broadway production of Rent. Joining the original cast at its peak quickly parlayed into roles in Jesus Christ Superstar and Hairspray, as well as several TV appearances including spots on The Grammy's, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, and Carson Daly. She did a singing feature on HBO's The Sopranos and will be performing in the up and coming Sex and the City movie. In October 2009, Shayna will also have her own special airing on the television channel TLC.
In addition to the Broadway and Hollywood scene, artists like Moby have collaborated with her in top selling singles. She sang on the first single of Moby's 2008 release Last Night, where the song reached #1 on the US Billboard Dance charts and was featured in J.J. Abram's blockbuster Cloverfield. Her voice continues to remain in high demand with recent features on the Grammy-nominated album Great Joy and the soundtracks of Legally Blonde 2, Bambi 2, and the remake of Hairspray starring John Travolta.
These achievements have brought Steele to release her first full-length album, I'll Be Anything. The record represents an artistic culmination and catharsis for Steele. She says, “This album covers so much of my life. Whether it was one beautiful second or one horrible year… I couldn't limit myself to one sound, one voice or style of writing, but … it all makes sense. It all flows.” Moving from gritty street funk to samba to piano croon and back, I'll Be Anything, is a strong personal statement from an artist whose true voice can't be wrangled into one style or label.
