At least once a month I am asked the question “How do I get a six pack/flat abs/washboard stomach?” The answer I give is always the same: a strict diet, fat burning cardio, an effective strength training routine and consistency. However, the abs serve a greater purpose than providing us with a nice and sexy beach body.

Strong Abs Reduce Pain: The abs (aka the "core", "center", "powerhouse") provide our body with the stability to stand/sit up straight and the control necessary to move our extremities effectively.  For most people, standing/sitting up straight is an issue (hence the prevalence of low back pain in our society).

When the abs “draw in and up” or when you “zip the zipper” (imagine a zipper that starts at your pubic bone and ends at your breast bone) the abdominal musculature turns on and you’ll notice your body “wants” to obtain proper posture and alignment.

Strong Abs Like To Stay Tight: There is power in your exhale.

Try this: Take a big inhale through the nose to fill your lungs with air then take a big exhale and engage your abs as you slowly release the air.  Notice how tight and firm your abs become.  If your body becomes accustomed to engaging on each exhale then you will encourage your abs to stay tight and firm all day long.

Strong Abs Make You Stronger:  Incorporating abdominal awareness into your strength training routine can increase you strength substantially.  Every time you exhale and exert effort, engage your abs (drawing the belly button behind you).
