"Tokyo!" an anthology film by three cinema visionaries arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, June 30.
The film features three directors, Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Leos Carax (The Lovers on the Bridge) and Bong Joon-Ho (The Host). Each uses their brand of storytelling to weave a thematic tale set in the ultra-modern metropolis of Tokyo.
In "Tokyo!" Michael Gondry, Leos Carax and Bong Joon-Ho tackle themes of transformation, anarchy and rebirth, respectively. They examine the nature of one unforgettable city as it's shaped by the disparate people who live and work inside an emormous, evolving and densely populated Japanese megalopolis.
"Tokyo!" is part psychogeography, part urban valentine and part freak show. It makes you see city life with a new point of view.
"INTERIOR DESIGN," by Michael Gondry is the story of a young couple trying to set themselves up in Tokyo. An aspiring film director and his wayward girlfriend are rudderless and begin to go under in this teaming city, until the young woman, utterly alone, becomes the object of a bizarre transformation.
"MERDE," by Leos Carax brings anarchy to the forefront with the introduction of a mysterious creature that spreads panic by means of his provacotive and destructive behavior. The man is dubbed "The Creature of the Sewers" by the media, and arouses both passion and repulsion until the moment he is captured.
"SHAKING TOKYO," by Boon Joon-Ho tells the story of a man who has lived in his apartment for more than 10 years, keeping all contact with the outside world to a minimum. When a pizza delivery girl faints in his home he falls in love and a rebirth begins.
The DVD and Blu-Ray disc feature bonus footage that includes the "making of" each of the three stories in "Tokyo!" The DVD retails for $24.95 and the Blu-Ray disc retails for $34.95. "Tokyo!" is released by Liberation Entertainment.
