Oak Mountain State Park is perfect outing for Birmingham locals
Labor Day typically signifies the close of summer travel and the return of children to school. Often this day also signals families to plan an “end of summer” outing that will create lasting memories for years to come. For Birmingham residents, nearby Oak Mountain State Park is just the ticket for fun and relaxing without breaking the bank.
Oak Mountain State Park is located in Pelham (15 minutes from downtown Birmingham) and offers picnic facilities, water recreation, golf, horseback riding, biking/hiking trails, camping, beaches and much more. Admission is only a couple of bucks and it is well worth every dime.
Oak Mountain is Alabama’s largest park with more than 9,000 acres. Some folks choose to stay in vacation cottages while others enjoy the campgrounds, but either way, you’ll have access to all of the above amenities. We love to go out for the day and sleep in our own beds at night.
Depending on what your family likes to do, you'll quickly find favorite places. Many visitors flock to the beach areas for some last of the summer rays, but other water activities capture guests with boating (love the paddle boats!) and fishing activites. The biking/hiking trails are great for exercise or leisurely strolls and you never know what creature you might run into! A favorite spot at Oak Mountain for my family is the wildlife rehabilitation center where wounded and orphaned wild creatures are cared for.
Relaxing in an atmosphere of mountains and water creates the perfect outing for any family. This is truly the best kept secret in central Alabama…affordable, fun, and family-friendly!
