Sweetheart Rock On The Southeast Edge

Of The Island Of Lanai

Sweetheart Rock is just a 5-minute walk from Manele Bay and is located on the edge of the beautiful Hulopoe Beach Park. Named Pu'u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock), it can be seen to your left as you approach Hulopoe Beach Park, on the southeast corner of the Hawaiian island of Lanai.

Like most visitors to Lanai, if you come via the ferry it will be easy to see Sweetheart Rock from the boat.  The picture to the right was taken aboard the Maui-to-Lanai ferry.  Take The Ferry To Lanai - bit.ly/nduYt -  Hulopoe Beach Park Photo Slideshow - bit.ly/2ukYut

Standing 80 feet tall and about 145 feet offshore, Sweetheart Rock is one of the most recognized landmarks on Lanai.  To get there, take the path on the left-hand side of the bay as you face the ocean at Hulopoe Beach Park.  You'll walk along numerous and then come to a expansive area with an excellent view of Sweetheart Rock and a black-sand beach below!

As you face Sweetheart Rock (see picture to left), you'll see a path along the cliff-line that will take you slightly above Sweetheart Rock, where you can take incredible pictures and actually look down on the large rock formation.  Be Careful! Do not attempt to jump off the cliff, as the water below is very rough and deceptively treacherous.

Sweetheart Rock is a Lanai Legend, where locals will tell you the story of a young man and a beautiful wife.  She was so attractive that he attempted to keep her hidden in a nearby cave.  One day, a storm suddenly arose and the waves were so strong that she drowned while he was away.  So stricken with grief, he asked the Gods to give him the power to climb the lone rock in the ocean, where he leaped from the top, taking his own life.  Thus, the Legend of Sweetheart Rock!
