In a wobbly economy, why should shoppers take a chance that the stores and boutiques in their neighborhood offer the best deals? Why should savvy shoppers wait for the deals to come to them?
A popular trend known as the shopping tour is quickly making a resurgence in today's environment. And, according to shopping and travel expert Deborah Mayer, why wait to find bargains in the US when the Dollar is seeing record spikes against the Euro this year.
Mayer's company Shop Around Tours conducts visits to Italy (her next one is November 7-14 and still has openings) where guests are given exclusive access to bargain outlets from famous Italian and international designers.
"This is recession buster pricing," says Deborah Mayer, "these days, no one is too good for a deal. The outlets are bursting with merchandise just waiting for that savvy shopper to snap them up."
Shop Around Tours is no stranger to operating trips to Italy during economic downturns: the company's first organized tour was in November 2001.
"Now that fewer Americans are traveling, the welcome we get in Italy is outstanding...people are especially warm and delighted to see us," says Mayer.
There is no typical Shop Around Tours traveler. The company's clients have ranged from the aspirational shopper who chose to make the tour their first trip abroad to the more seasoned traveler and shopper seeking the ultimate fashion find and the resulting bragging rights.
Shop Around Tours and similar companies provide travelers with a sense of comfort since the details are covered while offering up bargain prices on designer goods. Making the travel dollar stretch across the Atlantic Ocean seems to be de rigueur for those who prefer to tote their Prada along the Via Veneto rather than drive their Prius to the local mall.
