President speaks directly to schoolchildren
The President of the United State will give a speech directly to children at school on September 8. The talk will also be supported with a lesson plan for the teachers to make the event more educationally relevant. I wonder if it should be followed by a Republican response by a chosen spokesman.
The federal government does not run the local schools. School districts are community based and guided by local school boards composed of local citizens. The state government may put out standards and certification guidelines but the bulk of the control is in the school board directed superintendents. The President speech may be an intrusion.
Presidents have made many speeches on education but they have been to the general public. I have seen posters of Presidents with “stay in school “captions. The problem with the direct to the school speech is it not filtered through parents and guardians. The act of putting the student in front of a web speech in the middle of the day gives the individual child the ideal that they are directly responsible to the president of the United States. This gives the ideal that President Obama is another teacher at the school. This is not the role of the national executive.
I am not ready to assign sinister intentions to the President. I just do not see this initiative a good idea. I cannot envision how he can pull this off and still be apolitical. This seem like an event you would see in a totalitarian govern country. I believe a mass speech to schoolchildren appears authoritarian no matter how benevolent it' s delivered.
