We tend to sabotage opportunities. Our minds interpret change as an enemy, much the same way our immune system reacts to vaccines. We judge change based on our culture, our past experiences and most of all, our conditioning. This creates anxiety and giving in to anxiety will not only create fear, it can cost you your goal.
Goals are often born from complaints, “my clothes are too tight,” really means, “I want to lose weight,” or “I hate my job” could be, “I want to start my own business.” If we were to consider the source of these complaints, that is, take responsibility, we could well be on our way to making a change -- creating a goal that could possibly change our lives.
One of the most difficult aspects of reaching a goal is the work required; we tend to give up or create stumbling blocks. These become obstacles which self-sabotage and cause secret anxieties: “What if I become a gym rat?” “Will I start taking steroids?” “Strangers will laugh at me.” It is only when you become aware that these are fears that your own mind has put in place to “protect” that you can consciously make the choice to jump over these obstacles and remain steadfast.
If you find yourself complaining about something that is within your control, why not consider making a change? Ron Hudson who runs the Immediate Influence blog, sent this quote to me today, “It’s not what happens, it’s what you do that makes the difference.” - Jim Rohn.
