Bollywood is a popular colloquial hash term derived from combining Bombay and Hollywood. It commonly refers to the (now) Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. Incidentally, Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest in the world. The term – and industry – has gained soaring popularity following the Academy Awards nomination and win of the cultural film, Slumdog Millionaire.
The music from Bollywood films (filmi music) and the accompanying dances are mostly based on East Indian culture and are often blended with American dance styles. Another alluring teacher (I should caution, all of these instructors are stunningly prepossessing and bubbling with charm), Pooja Narang is a choreographer and artistic director. She teaches Bhangra, a fitness style she promises “will help you to shed extra pounds and stay trim.” The drum beats in this catchy folk dance can be heard continuously on her website. Ms. Narang’s class is taught from the very basics, “it's great fun, a great workout and a great way to relieve stress!” she added. [Learn more here]
Personal trainer and dance instructor, Achal Dua, is the creator of “Bollywood Abs.” His site attempts to bridge the gap between fitness and the South Asian mentality, a gap that Dua believes stems from being “self conscious.” [South Asian’s] don’t know what to do or where to start. I want to create an equally effective series that could break through that barrier.” Mr. Dua astutely included download links to some popular Bollywood workout music. [Learn more here]
